What Vegetables To Plant In March
Well when it comes to busy months in the garden then March is where it really starts for me as summer only seems a few short months away.
If you planted Brussel Sprouts in february inside in propagators they can now be transported outside to grow in your greenhouse, like wise if you started growing cauliflowers inside then they can now also be transported out to the greenhouse (A frost heater is recommended for use overnight until all danger has passed).
It is not too late to start growing celeriac and celery indoors if you did not plant your celeriac or celery seeds last month.
Now is the prime time to sow chilli plants and pepper plants inside if you have not already planted them, if you live in a cooler climate the earlier that you plant your chilies plants and pepper plants the better. They have a very slow growth to start with and hence February/March is around the right time to set them growing, particularly if like in the UK you have a limited vegetable growing season.
If you like salad then set lettuce growing in trays this month ready for transportation outside. Other salad crops such as cucumbers, tomatoes and gherkins can now be grown in the greenhouse/under glass as long as adequate frost protection is in place. Spring onions will also grow quickly if planted now - Of note we have had good results planting our spring onions in containers.
You can now plant radishes directly into the ground under cloches/cold frames.
Provided the ground is not frozen then you can get planting broad beans directly into the soil. Carrots, chard, early turnips and beetroot can now also be sown outside directly into the ground, as can summer cabbages. Leeks can be sown directly into the ground or transport them from inside if you started growing them in February.
Towards the end of the month as the danger of frost decreases then parsnips can be planted.
Peas can also be planted from seed, however last year I do confess to using plug plants, which resulted in a good crop as none of the pea plants were taken birds, like they were when I just used pea seeds.
If you have not grown them from seed then you can plant onion sets and shallots in the ground directly this month. Asparagus crowns can be transported outside into the ground, as can artichoke tubers (Artichoke tubers are best bought online, rather than trying to grow artichokes from seed.
