How To Grow Vegetables

What Vegetables To Plant In June

Well Summer is now upon us and if you got your tomato plants in nice and early then they should be well advanced in growth by now, with a first crop in July.

By now it is warm enough to plant virtually everything straight in to the ground. However even though it is summer you should think ahead to Winter and start off winter cabbage seeds in the greenhouse this month, this is because they have a very long growing season and so they need an early start, also you should have plenty of space with all other plants now having been transplanted outside.

Lambs lettuce can also be set to grow for winter, although this can be sown directly outside. Also thinking further ahead again to winter then kale seeds can now be set growing.

More delicate plants such as cucumbers and gherkins can be sown from seed in the green house. They can be sown individually straight in to small pots, or even large ones if you have the space so that they will not need transplanting on as they grow bigger. Whilst both of these plants can be placed outside they will grow far better and remain more pest and disease free if grown in your green house.

When it comes to outdoors you can sow beetroot directly in the ground although I have found that it also does very well in containers. Keep it well watered though especially when the seeds have germinated.

Broccoli can now be sown direct to ground or transplanted out from under your cloches or green house.

Now is the time to get those carrots really going well, sow them in rows and protect them with a fleece or a fine mesh in order to stop the dreaded carrot flies from getting at them.

Courgettes and Butternut squash can be sown in to large pots or directly out.

Herbs such as dill and parsley can be set going now as they can at any time of year.

Now we come to my favourite - salad leaves, you can now buy them in a wide variety of flavours and as they grow so fast they are one of the best crops to grow to save money. Sow every 2 - 3 weeks to get a continuous crop, and switch to lambs lettuce as it gets colder in later months.

Also when it comes to salad crops sow spring onions in rows or large pots where they also grow very well.

When it comes to root vegetables then swede and turnips can be sown from seed outdoors this month.

Spinach can also be planted out directly, although make sure that you plant it in to ground that contains well rotted manure.

Lastly you can set sweetcorn growing directly outside or ideally be transplanting smaller plants out that you set going in may.
