What Vegetables To Plant In January

January is traditionally the start of the coldest two months of the year and as such accordingly this is one of the quieter months and is often used as preparation time for the coming months. It is an ideal time to be making sure that your garden is ready for the next season. Tasks such as digging well rotted manure into your raised beds can be carried out if the garden is not frozen.

When it comes to planting out then growing garlic is a good idea as it can be sown now as it will not be affected by snow or frost when planted as it is very hardy when it comes to cold temperatures.

You can start growing herbs on a south facing windowsill, whilst herbs will grow slower than in Summer, the herbs will grow well enough inside to be ready to plant out once the last chance of frost has past, which can be April or May depending on where you live. The majority of herbs can be grown year round but if you love gardening then setting them growing in one of the quieter months will give a meaningful task to do!

Whilst we ourselves do not grow much fruit we do grow strawberries and you can start growing them in a greenhouse or under cloches in order to get en early Summer crop. Of note is that certain varieties of strawberry actually do far better after a frost, as it seems to "Shock" the strawberry plant into early growth.

You can start growing celeriac or growing celery indoors or in a greenhouse in a heated propagator in order to grow an early crop.

Onion seeds can also be planted inside in propagators, whilst growing onion sets from seed takes some care, if you plant your onion seeds in January then they will have time to develop into adequate sized onion bulbs when the weather is warm enough to plant the onions outside.

Lastly start your early crop potatoes 'chitting' on a windowsill indoors, but ensure the seed potatoes are kept free from too much damp.
