What Grows Well In Containers

Are you interested in container gardening, but are not sure which vegetables grow well in containers? Well actually most vegetables do with only a few exceptions, but of course there is more too it than just that.

When growing vegetables in containers you need to try and buy container variety seeds for your vegetables, as if you use normal varieties you may be disappointed with the results, or the vegetable plants will simply grow too big for the pot.

If they grow too big they will not get enough nutrients and they will have a tendency to starve the soil or compost that they are in resulting in poor tasting crops.

Vegetables that grow easily in containers are: -

Lettuce - This is very easy to grow and once it is warm enough can be sown straight into the container and covered with a fine layer of compost. It will start growing in 2-3 weeks. Very easy

Beetroot - I have tried this myself and it grows well, however it will take a long time to grow.

Herbs - They are ideally started inside and then transported outside when it is warm enough.

Carrots and parsnips - Just make sure that you buy the container variety of you may be disappointed at the results.

Potatoes - You can buy easy start potato bag kits that come complete with three potato growing bags, with seed potatoes included. These are a good investment as they can be re-used for years.

Garlic - This does grow really well if grown in deep pots. Once planted, just ensure the soil is kept quite damp, and it will just get on with growing without any help, and slugs hate it.

The main thing with container gardening is the battle against slugs and snails. You may think that you do not have any in your patio garden or rooftop terrace, but put out some vegetable plants and trust me they will appear!

However unlike a normal garden, container gardening has one other big thing in its favour and that is that these pests are easier to beat than in a normal garden. You can buy copper strips to go around the outside of your containers. They are not cheap but they do not wear out. Simply put slugs and snails hate crawling over them, as it causes an electric reaction with them that repels them every time. A vital ingredient in the container gardeners armoury!
